TV/FILM: Bisexual Erasure – The Unicorn Scale

Unicorn Scale - pixabay

Unicorns are amazing: it’s pretty safe to say that is a fact. Unicorns, however, also happen to be legendary creatures whose existence have been questioned by many. Just like bisexuals, we dare to say. Talia Squires, editor-in-chief at Bi.org and creator of the Unicorn Scale, agrees. The Unicorn Scale ‘explores the quality of bi representation in film and television’ and it does so in an entertaining way. Squires reviews movies and TV shows focusing on bisexual storylines and assigning from one to four unicorns. ‘Siskel and Ebert have thumbs, Leonard Maltin has stars, I wanted unicorns. The bi community has … Read more

Shadowhunters

According to The Hollywood Reporter, sources said that Constantin Films, the series producer, lost its output deal with Netflix, which was funding much of the project. The show represents not only the LGBTQ+ community, but many other minorities as well and has set an example for lots of other shows. This can’t be over yet,’ wrote @ShumDarioNews. Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Buffy the Vampire Slayer may be about to become the next fan favourite to get the reboot treatment. A Fox official hinted that the company is in talks about the future of cult 90’s series that spanned over six years before ending in 2003. Speaking at the INTV Conference in Jerusalem, Fox TV group chair Gary Newman said that Buffy “is probably the most ripe show we have for bringing back”. “It’s something we talk about frequently and Joss Whedon is really one of the greatest creators we ever worked with,” Newman said. However, he insisted that he was … Read more

This actually happened a couple months back, but I missed it entirely: In its quest to launch a hit fantasy series of the Game of Thrones caliber, Amazon has closed a massive deal — said to be close to $250 million — to acquire global TV rights to The Lord of the Rings, based on the fantasy novels by J.R.R. The LOTR original series, a prequel to Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring, will be produced by … Read more

TV: Highs of ‘Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams’ Outweigh the Lows

Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams

Is it possible for a piece of pop culture to be an imitation when it’s already being imitated? That’s the tricky hypothetical facing Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams, the latest original series from Amazon’s streaming service. Electric Dreams is an episodic sci-fi anthology that deploys a wide range of recognizable faces, both British and American, to bring each of its self-contained worlds to light. (An international coproduction, Electric Dreams aired on the U.K.’s Channel 4 last fall before making its stateside premiere last Friday.) In this respect, Electric Dreams is to Black Mirror what Amazon’s Lord of the Rings project … Read more
