YA in Speculative Fiction

Gay YA

Today’s topic comes from QSFer Anastasia Vitsky: “Could we have a day devoted to YA?” I think it’s a great idea. While I haven’t written any yet myself, there’s a market for it. So here are my questions today – do you write or read LGBT YA sci fi, fantasy or paranormal books? If you’re an author in this genre, how have they been received? What sells and what doesn’t? Is it difficult navigating the line between what’s acceptable and what’s not in YA? And as a reader, what are some of the stand-out books you’ve read?

Interview: Zev de Valera, Author of the Ring of Amentotep Series

Talisman

Today we’ve got another exclusive interview for you, with QSFer Zev de Valera, author of the Ring of Amentotep Series. Enjoy! QSF: So you’re writing an MM series – how would you describe it, in a nutshell? A Brazil nut? I love Brazil nuts. OK. I’ll be serious. It began as a short story for a ‘gay superhero’ open call, but was picked up as a stand-alone short. The series idea came when my editor said: stop with the cliff-hangers unless you intend this to be a series. So, I fleshed out the idea of this regular guy who comes … Read more

Announcement: Pirate, by LV Lloyd

Pirate

QSFer LV Lloyd has a new sci fi book out: “Undercover agent Liam Connell stared at his captor. He looked like a pirate from a holovid— black trousers, a white, puffy-sleeved shirt, and a purple sash wrapped jauntily around his waist. Wavy black hair fell to his shoulders and … Connell couldn’t believe it. He actually had gold hoops hanging from his ears. The pirate ran his forefinger lightly down Connell’s cheek and smiled. “Mmm! Mmmm! What do we have here?” Just what had Connell gotten himself into? (M/M Romantic Sci-Fi)” Excerpt The space drive died between one heartbeat and … Read more

Sci Fi Futures – Near or Far?

Her

Today’s topic – how do you like your sci fi – near or far? There are a lot of great stories out there that take current trends and extrapolate them into the near future. The film “Her” was one of these that I really enjoyed, because it had that “just-around-the-corner” feel, like it could actually happen within a few years. I loved this film’s ideas of how we might soon interface with tech. Then there’s a branch of sci fi that’s set so far in the future that it’s no longer recognizably connected to our present – or is in … Read more

Getting There

Today I’m wondering about getting there. If you write or read interplanetary or intersolar sci fi – how do characters get around? Oh sure, there’s always hyperspace. But what are some of the more creative ways you’ve written, read, or thought about to get Captain Donatella and First Communications Officer Christopher from Planet Fabulous to Amazonia? And how about on-planet? In 100 years, 500 years, 1000 years, how will we get from one end of the Earth to another? Space elevators? Sling shots? Tunnels through the middle of the Earth? Go a little crazy here with me.
