New Disney Text to Speech Voices on TikTok Won’t Say Gay, Lesbian or Queer

TikTok Disney Voices

Disney fans were delighted when text-to-speech character voices were introduced to TikTok, until they noticed some strange restrictions on LGBT+ terms. The text-to-speech voices, including characters Rocket Racoon (Guardians of the Galaxy), C-3PO (Star Wars) and Stitch (friend of Lilo), were added to TikTok on Disney Plus Day on Friday (12 November). But TikTok users soon noticed that, unlike all other voices on the app, the Disney characters refused to say the words “queer”, “lesbian” and “gay”. If included in the text, the characters will just skip the word, for example when one TikTok user made various voices say “gay … Read more

TV: Why Does Bewitched Feel So Queer?

Bewitched

Why does Bewitched feel so queer? It was about a straight couple, after all, and never had a single explicitly LGBTQ+ character. And yet the sitcom, which ran from the mid-60s to the early 70s, has an intensely queer feeling. It somehow comes off as queer without ever actually coming out. How is that possible? Behold, the power of subtext! Bewitched, which was recently referenced (obliquely) on the show WandaVision, was about a witch named Samantha who marries a mortal named Darren, and the couple decides to keep her powers a secret. The show debuted pre-Stonewall, at a time when … Read more

MOVIES: This 1960’s Horror Film Put Queerness Up Front

The Haunting

In the 1960s, people weren’t generally accustomed to seeing LGBT+ representation on screen. The Haunting, for many, changed that. The film, released in 1963, has gone down in history as one of the greatest horror films ever made. Based on the acclaimed novel The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson, it follows a group of people who descend on a supposedly haunted house for a supernatural experiment. Ultimately, The Haunting was only a modest success at the box office, with some cinema-goers disappointed by a film that relies more on atmosphere than jump scares. Despite this, The Haunting has … Read more

HISTORY: Nine People You Probably Didn’t Know Were Queer

public domain art

Every LGBT+ History Month, we come together to celebrate queer culture and our many achievements. But while it’s relatively easy to find icons and heroes to look up to nowadays, it can seem like there aren’t many queer figures to connect to who lived before the 20th century. In many periods of history, LGBT+ people weren’t exactly welcomed out of the closet, so it can be difficult to find openly queer idols. Fortunately, historians have done the hard work of uncovering lots of prominent figures’ sexualities, so you can have a whole new batch of people who you learned about … Read more

COMICS: Four Joyously Queer Marvel Moments

Marvel Queer Moments

There aren’t many LGBT+ superheroes in films, and fans probably wish for Marvel to include more of its queer comic moments on screen. In recent years fans have witnessed the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) turning its focus towards inclusion and diversifying its content. But somehow in a world of skintight and sometimes camp costumes, LGBT+ representation has been virtually nonexistent. Loki was confirmed as the first canonically bisexual MCU hero in June, 13 years after Iron Man launched the MCU and a decade after Loki’s introduction in Thor. Loki will soon be joined by more openly queer heroes. Eternals is … Read more
