FILM: Why Queer Women Love Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman

It’s been a long time coming but our favorite female superhero finally made it to the cinema in her own movie. Not only did Wonder Woman make a respectable $103.1 million on its opening weekend, it was the also best opening weekend for a female director ever. In this case, Patty Jenkins. It even made more money than Iron Man when it premiered. This is quite a breakthrough as film and TV studios seem to be very nervous about producing female-centric superhero offerings. Marvel tentatively released Jessica Jones to Netflix but the second season is still being worked out whereas … Read more

TRAILER: Blade Runner 2049

Blade Runner 2049

The full-length trailer for Blade Runner 2049 has finally arrived, and, let’s get this out of the way first: It looks amazing. With cinematography by infinite Oscar nominee Roger Deakins and production by Dennis Gassner, the world of Denis Villeneuve’s sequel looks to rival Ridley Scott’s original for misty dystopian moodiness, with just a touch of Only God Forgives thrown in for good measure. (Gassner and Deakins have worked together many times before, including on Skyfall and The Hudsucker Proxy, so it seems only reasonable to assume that Blade Runner 2049 will look like a cross between the two.) And these hopes were encouraged by reports that an early screening of the film featured Walking Dead star Danai Gurira’s Okoye … Read more

REVIEW: Logan

Logan

LOGAN, the latest and last (for now) solo Wolverine movie, was not kidding around when it opted for Johnny Cash’s “Hurt” as its trailer music. It’s not just the severity of the title, but the elegiac lyrics, and the dying man as guiding spirit / inspiration. Some trailers lie but this one spoke world-weary truth. This is exactly the kind of movie James Mangold, who also directed the Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line, delivers. Wolverine’s mutation were never those iconic claws, which were a science experiment to weaponize him, but his ability to instantly heal which also slows down his aging … Read more
