FOR READERS: FanFic or “Original” Fic?
FOR READERS Today’s reader topic comes from QSFer Wendy Rathbone: How many of you read equal parts fanfic and original? The crossover from fanfic to original is not as much as I thought it could be and I’m asking this question because I am curious as to how you, readers, see fanfic slash romance and original gay romance as differing? I’m talking intrinsic character/storylines, not amateur vs. pro, here. Writers: This is a reader chat – you are welcome to join it, but please do not reference your own works directly. Thanks! Asta’s Annotations: The Path to LGBT Fiction
Today I thought it might be interesting to discuss how we all came to LGBT fiction, whether as readers or writers. For me, it all started with the film Van Helsing in 2004. Meeting fellow fans through the LiveJournal account I had at the time led me to discover fan fiction, and slash in particular. One of my earliest serious attempts at writing was a fan fiction with a Dracula/Van Helsing back story. I’ve written the occasional piece since—Rimmer/Lister (Red Dwarf), Hannibal/Will (Hannibal), Ragnar/Athelstan (Vikings), Sherlock/John (Sherlock), Steve/Loki (Avengers) etc.—and I still read a story or two when a … Read more

For Readers: Is FanFic Important for Kids?
Today’s reader topic comes from QSFer Paula Wyant: Paula flagged this article for us: http://www.theestablishment.co/2016/05/16/the-importance-of-fan-fiction-for-queer-youth/ Which makes this point: Fanfic communities are often a safe place for young, queer writers to begin navigating their identity. “Sometimes, the online space is the only place they can be out,” says Kristina Busse, founding co-editor of Transformative Works and Cultures. “They are still negotiating what they want to be called—like what their pronouns are—and coming out as trans online allows them to explore that identity.” So what do you think? Are/were you a fan fic reader? If so, did it help you? Or … Read more
For Readers: I Love Fan Fic

For Writers: Imitation – Is It Flattery?
Today’s writer topic comes from QSFer Julia AT Weaver Flowers: How would you feel about people writing fan fiction based on your stories? It’s a great question. Writer reactions to fan fic have been all across the board, from happy praise to… well, let’s just say there are some things you should NEVER say to your fans. But beyond public reactions, there’s the private one. So if you suddenly discovered that others had taken your world and written their own take on it (not for profit, of course), how would you feel? Flattered? Upset? Mildly confused? Come join the chat
