“Reawakening” by Amy Rae Durreson

19547844Genre: MM Fantasy Romance

Length: Novel

Reawakening is a story about a dragon, Tarn, who wakes up after hundreds of years of hibernation. He discovers that his hoard—family—have all moved on or are dead. Lonely, he leaves his mountain home in search of civilization, and finds himself in the desert, where he meets a rather feisty air spirit, Gard. He gets kicked out of the desert (because who wants a dragon hanging around?—lol) and he decides to try again with the air spirit in his human form. Only when Tarn arrives in the desert by caravan, he can’t find Gard anywhere, and he realizes that when he wasn’t the only one to have been awoken from slumber. Tarn’s ancient enemy is back and has taken his air spirit as a hostage. None of the other dragons are awake, so it’s just Tarn and the shadow, and the last battle left Tarn in a coma for hundreds of years. The odds are against him and the world he’s vowed to protect.

This is a delightful tale, and the characters are consistent and memorable. I especially liked Gard, in both his human and spirit form. Very cheeky. The power struggle between the dragon and the air spirit was well thought out. It’s convenient that they both end up being gay—for immortal and expansive beings, I think that’s probably saying something. But Gard doesn’t really like how our cocky dragon comes off. He’s more than a bit affronted by Tarn’s constant desire to possess him, and the two have a spectacular back and forth, hot one minute and cold the next. Tarn doesn’t understand why Gard is upset, and Gard doesn’t understand why Tarn is so intense and clueless. Hah.
