Discussion: “Your Writing is Worse Than Fanfic”

bad reviews

It happens to all of us. We read the Goodreads reviews. Or the Amazon reviews. Or any other crowdsourced review site. At first, it’s fine. OK, someone liked my book – they REALLY liked my book. Oh, here’s someone else that enjoyed it, but wished it was longer – hey, even that’s kind of a compliment, right? Then you see it. The dreaded one star review. The reader who couldn’t find a single nice thing to say about your labor of love, the thing you worked on for months and months (or even years and years) and gave your heart … Read more

When You’re Not in the Mood

Today’s topic comes from QSFer MK Mancos: “Writing when you’re not “in the mood” but are on deadline. Opening a vein and putting your emotions on paper.” Ss writers, we all live for those times when the writing just flows out of us – when it’s like we opened a spigot and it just all floods out onto the page. But often writing is drudgery. Sometimes we’re writing the “he traveled through the forest from here to there” scenes that have nothing exciting happening. Sometimes we are stuck on a thorny plot or character issue. And sometimes we just don’t … Read more

Discussion: Shamans and Sorcerers

Today’s topic comes from QSFer John Allenson: “Shamans and Sorcerers. How to write competing magical systems.” So let’s break this down a little. There are many forms of magic in film, literature, and cultural tradition. As John pointed out, we have Shamans and Sorcerers – but we also have magical systems from most cultures and traditions, as well as the many types of magic invented in Fantasy. Mixing and matching these can be fun for both the writer and the reader, but can also be disastrous, especially when the systems clash. Think of such cross-cultural disasters Patsy and Eddy from … Read more
