#OWNVOICES: Intersex Authors

Ownvoices Intersex

We’re starting a new thing on Saturdays on the QSF Facebook group – #ownvoices. Each week, we’ll feature a different group of writers who don’t get the attention they should. Today, we’re featuring authors who are intersex and who write intersex characters in speculative fiction. #ownvoices If you’re an intersex author, tell us about yourself, your experiences as an author, and the spec fic books you write (especially those with intersex characters – with links, please). If you’re not, you can still participate – share your favorite intersex authors and their spec fic works that include intersex characters. Note: This … Read more

Did You Know “Vampire Facials” Were a Thing?

Last September, officials began investigating a spa in Albuquerque, New Mexico, for potentially exposing its clients to blood-borne infections through their “vampire” facials and other spa treatments. Now, the New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) has confirmed that two clients of the VIP Spa contracted the “same” HIV virus, according to a statement. This finding “increas[es] the likelihood” that the infections resulted from spa treatments involving needles, officials said. One such treatment that the spa offered is the so-called vampire facial, which involves smearing a person’s own blood across his or her face after the skin has been sanded down … Read more

SPACE: Hubble Finds Buckyballs in Space

The Hubble Space Telescope recently spied new evidence of a peculiar molecule: wiggly buckyballs, which have intrigued astrophysicists since they were discovered in space nearly a decade ago. Dubbed Buckminsterfullerene, these supersize molecules are made of 60 carbon atoms linked together in pentagons and hexagons to form a hollow sphere. The shape of these structures is much like a soccer ball, or like the geodesic domes designed by 20th-century architect Richard Buckminster Fuller (the inspiration for the molecule’s name). Buckyballs were first spotted in space in the form of a gas in 2010, and then as particles in 2012. And … Read more

FOR READERS AND WRITERS: Where’s the Line?

FOR READERS & WRITERS Today’s writer topic comes from QSFer Tory Phoenix: What is the difference between romance, erotic romance, erotica, and simple porn? Not to suggest that there is anything wrong with porn, it has its place. Sometimes you just need some simple smut. But the demarcation between these seems to be a rather subjective and ghostly grey line. I am working on something I have called: Story driven SciFi Erotica. The sex is there when it drives the plot, F2B (Fade to Black) when it doesn’t. It could all be made F2B without breaking the story, and the … Read more
