Said Schnapp to The Wrap: “It’s really up to interpretation. 5 drag queens and LGBT faves who could play The Little Mermaid’s Ursula

Ursula

When Disney announced that Halle Bailey—a black singer and actor–would play Ariel in its live action remake of The Little Mermaid, the news was taken by some as a hint that producers might cast other key roles diversely—including main villain and LGBT+ icon Ursula. The original 1989 animation drew Ursula as a vampy sea witch with purple skin, bold blue eye makeup and a shock of white hair—a design heavily inspired by subversive drag queen Divine, real name Glenn Milstead. According to a 2016 article in Hazlitt, the film’s producer and lyricist Howard Ashman might even have considered casting Milstead for the … Read more

Black holes are engines of destruction on a cosmic scale, but they may also be the bringers of life. New research on supermassive black holes suggests that the radiation they emit during feeding frenzies can create biomolecular building blocks and even power photosynthesis. The upshot? Far more worlds roaming the Milky Way and beyond could be suitable to life, the researchers speculated. For their new study, published May 24 in the Astrophysical Journal, scientists created computer models to look at the radiating disks of gas and dust called active galactic nuclei, or AGN, that swirl around supermassive black holes. CLIMATE CHANGE: Arctic Permafrost is Melting – 70 Years Sooner Than Expected

In the Canadian Arctic, layers of permafrost that scientists expected to remain frozen for at least 70 years have already begun thawing. The once-frozen surface is now sinking and dotted with melt ponds and from above looks a bit like Swiss cheese, satellite images reveal. “We were astounded that this system responded so quickly to the higher air temperatures,” said Louise Farquharson, a co-author of the study and postdoctoral fellow at the Permafrost Laboratory at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Permafrost is ground that remains frozen for at least two years. It underlies about 15% of the unglaciated Northern Hemisphere … Read more
