While the truth might be out there, technological aliens don’t seem to be — at least not yet. New results from the most comprehensive Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) program ever undertaken — which surveyed 1,327 nearby stars for signals from intelligent beings — have turned up empty. “There’s certainly nothing out there glaringly obvious,” Danny Price, an astrophysicist at the University of California, Berkeley, and lead author of a paper about the results, which were published in The Astrophysical Journal, told Live Science. “There’s no amazingly advanced civilizations trying to contact us with incredibly powerful transmitters.” While the team … Read more

Short Answer – yes. And almost everything died. Would you ever go on vacation to the North Pole? Unless you like subzero temperatures and Nordic-ski treks, probably not. But if you lived 56 million years ago, you might answer differently. Back then, you would have enjoyed balmy temperatures and a lush green landscape (although you would have had to watch out for crocodiles). That’s because the world was in the middle of an extreme period of global warming called the Paleo-Eocene Thermal Maximum, when the Earth was so hot that even the poles reached nearly tropical temperatures. But was the … Read more

Migration: Judge’s Choices

Time to announce the Migration Judge’s Choices and Directory’s Choice (in no particular order) Thanks to the judges, and congrats to the authors!: Brenda Noiseux: Zulu Finds a Home, by Kevin Klehr: In a genre that can lean heavily to the dark side, Kevin Klehr’s Zulu Finds a Home pokes lighthearted fun at the imagination. It’s thoroughly enjoyable at face value as a campy tale or viewed with a finer eye reflecting our own societies. Ben Brock: Skin Hunger, by Treasure Nguyen Unapologetically sensual, at times disgusting, and slightly silly, this story took some extreme risks and they all paid … Read more
