SCIENCE: Water Bears Have a Fatal Weakness – heat

tardigrade - deposit photos

Tiny-but-tough tardigrades, also popularly known as water bears, aren’t as indestructible as previously believed. These microanimals, which live in both fresh and salt water, are famous for their ability to survive extremes that would kill other organisms. But new research finds that the creatures rapidly wilt under heat. Water temperatures of less than 100 degrees Fahrenheit (37.8 degrees Celsius) can kill tardigrades in only a day. As global temperatures rise, that could become a problem for these animals, the authors of the new study said. “Tardigrades are definitely not the almost-indestructible organism as advertised in so many popular science websites,” … Read more

Sources of Inspiration: Getting Going

It’s the beginning of a new year. I should be filled with resolution to accomplish new things. Never had I felt more uninspired. I’ve solidified into a chunk of fandom and routine, rather like a thick, dense piece of fruitcake left on a platter from the holidays. How so I get myself to unsolidify? How can I release all of that story which has gotten stuck within me? It may be time for a change. If I alter one small thing in my routine, it could loosen everything up, shake some of that story loose. Maybe it’s time to do … Read more

FOR READERS & WRITERS Today’s reader/writer topic comes from QSFer Eric Alan Westfall: With a theatre background I certainly don’t want to deprive voice-actors of income, but I’ve never understood the attraction/value of an audio book, except for the visually impaired, or someone driving long distances where holding a book isn’t possible. I was given an audio version of a book that’s 8 hours long. I can read it myself in probably 3 hours. So why would I sit somewhere for another 5 hours, to accomplish the same goal? Why would anyone? And given the probable cost of the audio … Read more
