Starting a New Free Reads Section

Hi all… We’re continuing to expand the features on the Queer Sci Fi site. I’ve just added a free reads section – and to start it off, I added my own story Re-Life. If you have any free sci fi, fantasy, or paranormal works you’d like to have included, we can link to them on your site or another, or host them here on their own page. Works do not need to be exclusive to our site. If you want to add one, please email me at scott@queerscifi.com. :)

Writing Ugly

In writing, it seems to me that the trick is to invest these characters with flaws but to still make the reader fall in love with them. Because a flawed multidimensional character is often much more interesting than a picture-perfect Ken doll.

Promoting Your Book Online

As anyone who visits this blog regularly (or even looks at my Facebook page) will know, I recently had a short story accepted into a Dreamspinner anthology. It’s a thrilling first for me, but once the excitement wore off, I started wondering how to promote it – I mean, it’s great to be published, but what good is it if no one ever reads your masterpiece? I’m new to the writing promotion game, though I’ve been on FB, Twitter, Google + and Pinterest for years promoting my day job. I’ve seen some great ideas in the groups I’m a part … Read more

Book Review: The Starving Years

This book review is more centered on the author than the book. I love Jordan Castillo Price. She “bends the rules” of gay romantic fiction. But I couldn’t help but think as I read this great book, that this wasn’t a romance. I’d hesitate to say if it was super explicit or not. It was gay science fiction for sure, but I probably wouldn’t label it MMM, or even MMM Romance. Why does this bother me? This labeling? Good question. I think that this labeling possibly affects Price’s image and her work. She’s on the edge of these genres (science … Read more

The Tension Between Sci Fi Romance and Gay Sci Fi

In my wanderings through the LGBT sci fi community, I’m finding that there’s a whole lot out there these days melding sci fi themes with MM romance. While I think that’s wonderful and an amazing thing, I also find very little that’s straight (pardon the pun) sci fi that includes LGBT characters, but is not centered around an MM (or FF) romance. Don’t get me wrong – there’s a lot of great sci fi out there (Angel Martinez, Amy Lane, I’m looking at you) that gets the sci fi right and includes the romance too. But I come at this … Read more

Rating: 4.25 stars out of 5 When Robert Belton and his brothers left home to make their fortune in the Klondike gold fields, they never imagined where their gold fever and poor judgement would take them. Amid betrayals and gambling debts, only Robert is left to survive in Seattle and he does so by becoming a prostitute. Robert hopes to save enough money to make it over the Chilkoot Trail into the Yukon and join the hunt for gold. Dr. John Fauth is on sabbatical from his teaching post at the university in Chicago. Dr. Fauth carries a precious machine … Read more

Writing Five Things at Once

I’ve always thought I was a little ADD – generally, I flourish when I can be bouncing back sand forth between multiple tasks, and rarely do I sit down and do just ONE THING AT A TIME.

But sometimes I wonder if this serves me well in my writing too.

Gravitational Attraction Returns

The triumphant return of Gravitational Attraction – well, for the author, at any rate ;) – happens this Monday, July 21 at Dreamspinner Press. To celebrate, I’ll be haunting the intertubes for the next few days: Tomorrow, I’ll be taking over Dreamspinner’s FB page from 1-4 EST. Gravitational Attraction launches on Monday, so I’ll have a discount code for everyone and a giveaway at some point during the three hours. Stop on by – bring your questions, comments and requests. Within reason. Dreamspinner FB Page On Monday, I’ll be invading the Dreamspinner Blog – same idea, just blog posts instead … Read more
