The first thing he heard when he woke up was the screaming. It was a long, painful cry that ended up in a sad wail.
Then Rowan opened his eyes and remembered. And then it was him who wanted to scream.
He was in a dark cell, locked between three wet stone walls and a row of thick iron bars, with the regular sound of a water drop dropping in the background, and the periodic interlude of the screeching and squawking of mice. It was all very cliché. But effective. He was scared shitless.
He remembered being on the run with his friends, paranoid of every shadow. He remembered spending the night at an inn, forcing himself and the others to believe they had shaken off their pursuers. But he had trouble remembering how, exactly, he got caught and brought here. He only had the faint memory of a darkness even darker than the dark. Which made no fucking sense. He had never been good with words, anyway.
He got up and walked the two steps to the bars. He wasn’t chained, which was at least something less to worry about if he was to try to escape. A bitter laugh slipped from his mouth—escape? Did he take himself for the hero of a silly adventure book? Guys like Rowan didn’t escape, he knew it. Guys like him ended up quartered or boiled before being fed to the pigs.
