Teman and Jasim exchanged glances again, then made their way over to two of the empty sleeping mats in one corner. With another glance at the guards, Teman settled in on his mat. Whispering, “Are you ok?” Jasim followed suit so that they faced each other.
Teman’s automatic response was a nod, but he knew Jasim would see right through it. Instead he shrugged. “Honestly, I don’t know. I’m not sure it’s… really gotten through yet.”
Jasim nodded. “Yeah, I know what you mean.”
Teman glanced up at the guard, then reached down to adjust the cage a little bit. When the guard didn’t say anything, he moved it a little further until he was more comfortable. Jasim snagged the light blanket that lay at the bottom of Teman’s mat and pulled it over him, pausing to brush a bit of his long brown hair back.
Teman caught his hand and held it to one cheek for a moment. They’d been best friends all their lives, ever since they were very young children chasing each other around with fake swords. Together, they’d discovered so many things, learned so much, and in the darker moments, had even comforted each other. When Teman’s father had been killed, it was Jasim who’d been there, holding him, and eventually, giving his body for Teman to get lost in. And Teman had done the same for Jasim on more than one occasion. This was obviously another of those times.
So when Teman turned his face into Jasim’s hand, Jasim leaned over and dropped a soft kiss on his forehead. Another glance at the guard, a look at Rasheed, and when neither so much as blinked at them, they scooted closer together. Jasim wrapped arms around Teman who laid his head on Jasim’s chest and settled in, accepting the comfort silently. It would take them both a long time to get to sleep.
