I liked Resas menagerie by Kaye Draper a lot.
It’s different in that it’s a shifter story without the cult overtones.
But the most unusual must be Frances Pauli with the Soulstar Dragons series. About people with dragon spirits that come out of their belly buttons. I don’t remember if it’s LGBTQ relevant, but I really liked it.
Gre7g Luterman’s Kanti cycle takes my price though. It’s about a Fuzzy race, enslaved by a huge dragon race on a generation ship, their job being to maintain the ship and survey the planets they pass. It has a stargate thing that opens only to the dragons Homeworld. (The 7 in the authors name is not a typo.)
