FOR READERS
Today’s reader topic comes from QSFer Wendy Rathbone:
How many of you read equal parts fanfic and original? The crossover from fanfic to original is not as much as I thought it could be and I’m asking this question because I am curious as to how you, readers, see fanfic slash romance and original gay romance as differing? I’m talking intrinsic character/storylines, not amateur vs. pro, here.
Writers: This is a reader chat – you are welcome to join it, but please do not reference your own works directly. Thanks!
I seldom read fan fiction because I don’t know where to find it!
archiveofourown.org/ has massive amounts of fanfiction; just input whatever series you are interested in reading about, or the pairing that you are interested in, and the world shall open up before you.
I don’t read fanfic because what I have read (or most likely heard about) mixed unfortunate or just weird couplings, and I always feel like it’s an insult to the original writer. That said, I feel like most of the comic books and Their assorted media are nothing but fanfic. I want new stories about new people.
I think ‘FanFic’ is just another word for plagiarism. The worst thing is that so much of it is brilliant. Come on, people, if you can copy someone else’s voice, characters and universe (s) why can’t you invent your own?? I get that there is nothing new under the sun, but ….
