Video games: Pokémon Go May Have Its First Non-Binary Character

Blanche - Pokémon Go

The official blog of Pokémon Go, a massively popular mobile game, has fans excited with the possibility that one of its lead characters is non-binary. A post involving Blanche — leader of the blue Team Mystic, the largest of three teams players can join — refers to Blanche using they/them pronouns. The post states that while working on a malfunctioning piece of machinery, “Blanche became visibly upset, which tends to happen when things don’t go to their carefully curated plans.” The use of the non-binary pronoun for Blanche seems especially conspicuous since the same blog post uses “he” when referring … Read more

Why Don’t Mountains Grow Forever?

Imagine a world where mountains grow so high, they poke through the upper atmosphere and create a rocky maze for pilots to navigate. Maybe that world exists somewhere in the far reaches of the universe. But on Earth, mountains can’t grow much higher than Mount Everest, which extends 29,029 feet (8,840 meters) above sea level. So what stops our planet’s mountains from growing … forever? There are two major factors that limit mountains’ growth, said Nadine McQuarrie, a professor in the department of geology and environmental science at the University of Pittsburgh. The first limiting factor is gravity. Many mountains … Read more

Meet “Butch” the Pterosaur

Butch the Pterosaur

The fossil of a previously undiscovered pterosaur, known as a “flying lizard,” has been named Lenton’s iron dragon — but you can call him Butch. The 96-million-year-old pterosaur lived among dinosaurs and was found by a sheep grazier named Bob Elliott in Australia near Winton, Queensland. A new study detailing the fossil published Thursday in the journal Scientific Reports. The researchers who studied the new species named it Ferrodraco lentoni, or Lenton’s iron dragon, in honor of Graham “Butch” Lenton, Winton’s mayor who died several months after the fossil was found in early 2017. Lenton supported regional communities in western … Read more

Sources of Inspiration: Seeing What I Want

I just saw a series which is no longer on the air (you can see what it is from the picture). It gave me something I’m always looking for, yearning for in my stories and writing. Intimacy within adversity and conflict, offered up with all the raw power that two enemies find themselves within as they become something more. I’m not certain if Hannibal is a love story or not. I like the uncertainty of not knowing exactly what it is, the mystery. This love of mystery in such matters may be one of the reasons I’ve avoided classifying myself … Read more
