SPACE: Wanna See the Earth From Orbit, But Don’t Have $20 Million?

One Strange Rock

Looking down at the vast curve of planet Earth hundreds of miles below, I can see its white cloud cover stretching over expanses of blue ocean. This may be the closest I’ll ever get to outer space, but I haven’t left Midtown Manhattan. I’m peering at our distant world using a special “space” helmet that re-creates the dizzying sensation of hovering far above the planet. Displayed across my visor — and on those of my fellow “astronauts” in the seats of a small theater — were excerpts from “One Strange Rock,” a new documentary series from the National Geographic Channel … Read more

TV: A Buffy Reboot?

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Buffy the Vampire Slayer may be about to become the next fan favourite to get the reboot treatment. A Fox official hinted that the company is in talks about the future of cult 90’s series that spanned over six years before ending in 2003. Speaking at the INTV Conference in Jerusalem, Fox TV group chair Gary Newman said that Buffy “is probably the most ripe show we have for bringing back”. “It’s something we talk about frequently and Joss Whedon is really one of the greatest creators we ever worked with,” Newman said. However, he insisted that he was … Read more

ANALYSIS: Why Racists Hate “A Wrinkle in Time”

A Wrinkle in Time

A Wrinkle in Time was a must-see film for me. And completely different from Black Panther. It doesn’t mean, however, Ava Duvernay’s $100 million dollar film with a multicultural cast isn’t without problems. It is one of the reasons the film has received mixed reviews unlike Black Panther’s ongoing and wildly enthusiastic critical appraise. While it is wrong to expect from Duvernay what was achieved by Ryan Coogler’s blockbuster hit just because they are both African-American film directors – and moviegoers have never experienced back-to-back films with black actors as leads – the critiques about Duvernay’s interpretation of Madeleine L’Engle’s … Read more

Shadows of the Night: Remembering “Dark Shadows” – Boogieman In Lavender

It all started with a dream. A woman on a train on her way to a place unfamiliar and strange to her with the voiceover narration beginning with the words; “My name is Victoria Winters.” The understated beginning (from a dream by producer/creator Dan Curtis) of the cult T.V. series Dark Shadows which started out as a soap opera with gothic elements and morphed into something different, darker and some people insist, gayer. Remembered today as “the show with the vampire in it,” way before Twilight, Forever Knight or even Lestat and co., Dark Shadows added supernatural elements in a … Read more

Cheryl Blossom

Riverdale has another bisexual character after head cheerleader and all-round badass Cheryl Blossom came out in the latest episode. Madelaine Petsch, who plays Cheryl on the dark CW and Netflix show about Archie Comics characters, revealed last week that Cheryl was “definitely interested in both women and men”. And in an emotional scene with prominent bisexual lighting, Cheryl opened up about her sexuality to Toni Topaz, who also came out as bi earlier this season. Toni and Cheryl are among several Netflix characters to reveal their bisexuality in the past year, including Darryl Whitefeather on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Adam … Read more

TRAILER: Netflix’s Lost In Space

Netflix’s Lost In Space

Netflix has released the trailer for its reboot of Lost in Space, based on the 1960s TV series of the same name about a family of space colonists who veer off course and crash-land on an alien planet. The series has been reimagined twice before: once as a TV pilot in 2003 that never saw the air, and then as a much-maligned movie remake starring Matt LeBlanc of Friends fame. A middling success when it first aired, the original Lost in Space has become a cult classic in sci-fi communities, renowned for its campy ambition. Netflix’s reboot, however, looks to … Read more
