Where is All the Lesbian Sci Fi? (And Transgender and Bisexual and…)

There’s a huge market for MM Romance these days. Dreamspinner and others have built a whole business plan around it, and I’m always astonished when I see just how many titles there are out there. To a lesser extent, this holds true for MM sci fi, romance and otherwise. The same white male POV that has long held sway in traditional sci fi seems to exist in the LGBT sci fi market. Most stories out there seem to be about men, and often white men. I’ve been wanting to see more diversity in LGBT sci fi for years, bot in … Read more

Lesbian Sci Fi Film Debuts in Durham, North Carolina

A lesbian sci fi web series has been produced as a feature film. WUNC reports: People rarely associate gay and lesbian films with the science fiction genre. But a Durham-based production company, KVWorks, created a sci-fi lesbian web series. They adapted the two-year series into full length feature film. Frequency debuts at the 2014 North Carolina Gay and Lesbian Film Festival in Durham this weekend. Host Frank Stasio talks with writer and director Piper Kessler and producer Monique Velasquez about their work. It’s great to see LGBT sci fi, and lesbian sci fi in particular, getting some exposure.

What Will The Internet Become?

When I was a kid, I read lots of Golden Age sci-fi – Bradbury, Clark, Asimov – and although there were computers and sometimes even networks, nothing there approached what we have today. These fine men of sci fi’s past couldn’t have imagined the vast, interconnected network we have today, even though they did a pretty good jib with many aspects of the future. As I write near-future sci-fi, I wonder if I am similarly limited in my ability to see into the future of information tech. I find myself writing about people using keyboards and tablets and computer screens, … Read more

They’re always happy. Rory James has worked hard all his life to become a citizen of the idyllic city-state of Beulah. So is Tate Patterson. He’s from Tophet, too, but he’s not a legal immigrant; he snuck in as a thief. A city without crime seems like an easy score, until he crashes into Rory during a getaway and is arrested for assaulting a … Read more

Cheating Death

We’re going to a funeral today. It’s for one of Mark’s uncles – not someone I knew well. But it’s the latest in a string of funerals over the last several years. I’m reaching that age, I guess, where many of my friends and family members are passing on. In the last two years for the two of us, that’s included a grandmother, a mother, a dear friend, an uncle, a step mother, and several others. It’s made me reflect on family and life and death. And in the sci fi context, it’s made me think about immortality. I always … Read more

Would They Really Look Like Us?

For the purposes of MM-Romance driven gay sci fi, alien characters are often built like us – otherwise, would we want to have sex with them? And to be fair, this is not just a conceit confined to MM romance. Many sci fi TV shows have constructed their aliens around human lines – most prominently star Trek – with two arms, two legs, and a head with two eyes, a nose, a mouth, and two ears in generally the standard human configuration. Some have even come up with semi-plausible reasons for the similarities, from “it’s the only practical configuration” to … Read more

Getting There

We attended a reading of a play set in the early to mid 1800’s this week in downtown Sacramento. At one point in the play, one of the characters, an escaped slave, claims to have gone from the South to San Francisco, and then back to New York City, in a relatively short period of time. It was a bit unbelievable, and we later learned form the author that it was intended to cast doubt on the truthfulness of the character. But still, it got me thinking about transportation, and the role it plays in science fiction. If you ever … Read more

Which Genre Is Best Suited to the LGBT Experience?

I’ve been doing some promo work for the anthology The Bear at the Bar (shameless plug there) about bear romance, and it’s gotten me thinking about all the shades of the LGBT rainbow – gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transgender people, questioning, intersex, bears, otters, drag queens, leather daddies, gym bunnies, and so many more. I’m wondering if, of the three genres of sci fi, fantasy, and paranormal, is any one more suited than the the others for exploring the issues around the LGBT community? I’m not talking about having or exploring LGBT characters in these genres. I’m trying to get at … Read more
