Discussion: A Queer President?

I’m not sure who to ascribe today’s topic to – I mangled my notes on this one, but it’s a fun one – so if it was yours, please step up and tell me! Anyhow, it’s a fun one: In the US, we’ve had a black president, and soon we’ll probably have a female president. What about a gay president, one that’s openly (sorry, Abe) on the LGBT spectrum? I am the first to admit that I’m not a big politics person. While people are arguing about left and right, I’m still trying to figure out how we can have … Read more

News: Buildings of the Future?

The Interlace, one of Singapore’s most ambitious and unusual residential developments, has been crowned World Building of the Year 2015 at the World Architecture Festival. Built as a vertical village, OMA/Buro Ole Scheeren’s unique design strays away from the region’s classic housing – instead of clusters of isolated towers, the Interlace consists of 31 apartment blocks laced together. Discussion: Steampunk and Fantasy

Steampunk Fantasy

Today’s topic comes from QSFer Freddy MacKay: Steampunk AKA The Red Headed step child of SF and why a fantasy world with steam is not steampunk. AKA what caused it to get shoved into fantasy. It’s a fascinating question. We have all these sub genres, but some seem to be more dominant: Science Fiction Fantasy Paranormal Horror While some seem relegated to secondary status and have to be shoved into one of the “master” genres: Steampunk Superheroes Shifters Post Apocalyptic So who decides these things? And with genre boundaries blurring ever more, is it time to reshuffle how we think … Read more

Raider Captured

QSFer JJ Lore has a new sci fi book out, and she stopped by to share a guest post with us on the blog today: Sci-Fi Love, or, Spock Was My Babysitter I grew up loving science fiction. As a child of the 80’s I was eagerly first in line for all sorts of classic sci-fi films like the Star Wars trilogy, Robocop, and Aliens in the theatres. I first saw Blade Runner over Christmas break on a VHS (!) tape and now my holidays aren’t complete without another viewing. I also read sci-fi, gobbling up Asimov and Bradbury along … Read more

It’s an airspace Rossy and Reffet visited earlier in 2015. Rossy has also jetpacked over the Grand Canyon.
