TV: New Project Seeks to Bring Diversity to Children’s Animation

Big World, Little Om

Children’s animation is tragically low when it comes to diversity, not unlike the rest of the media landscape. There are a few shows like Steven Universe and The Legend of Korra, which strive to be more inclusive, but they’re the exception. Now, however, there’s a new title on the scene trying to change things. Big World, Little Om tells the story of Om and his two mothers. The series, if it becomes a reality, seeks to explore diverse issues families can face. As the website explains: ‘These issues can be anything from gender or sexuality, same sex parents to having … Read more

FOR READERS Today’s reader topic comes from QSFer Christopher Koehler: What do you look for in word-building? Do you want everything detailed down to the last blade of grass, or do you want writers to get to the story already? FOR WRITERS Today’s writer topic comes from QSFer Isaac Walker-Tye: I’ve always sat in literature classes and wondered if these authors that are studied actually intended to put messages and symbolism in their works, or if we’re just seeing patterns where there are none. What do you aim to do with your writing? Do you write to make something purely enjoyable with no underlining complexity, or do you try to include messages (be it moral, political, religious or so forth)? Join the chat

This anthology appeared before the recent big boom in LGBT-themed genre fiction, so I could select a story for the anthology (if asked, nobody has.) So, which LGBT-themed horror story would I pick as my favorite for an anthology? The story … Read more

FOR WRITERS Today’s writer topic comes from QSFer Scott: OK, so I’m gonna be a little selfish today, but it’s in a good cause that hopefully will help some of y’all who are in my same shoes. I have a new sci fi release coming out in October, and as it’s not a romance, I’m trying to reach out to the broader sci fi blogger community for reviews and blog tour stops, but it’s tough sledding. So… what are some of your favorite sci fi and fantasy blogs? have you tried to reach out to this market? What success have … Read more
