QSFer J. Scott Coatsworth has a new MM fantasy tale out: A New Year.
This special edition includes two versions of the story – the UK one that was originally published in the “Candle in the Dark” anthology, and the original (never before published) version set in San Francisco.
Version One:
Hank is at the end of his rope. The California high school senior is ready to jump off a bridge, to end it all, when Dale shows up.
Dale is a man with a secret, someone who will change the course of Hank’s life in a single night, and then vanish back into the fog.
But the two men are linked in ways Hank can’t even imagine, and when the time is right, they will see each other once again.
Version Two:
Heath is at the end of his rope. The British high school senior is ready to jump off a bridge, to end it all, when Finn shows up.
Finn is a man with a secret, someone who will change the course of Heath’s life in a single night, and then vanish back into the fog.
But the two men are linked in ways Heath can’t even imagine, and when the time is right, they will see each other once again.

Excerpt
The edge of the old cement pediment crumbled away beneath Hank’s feet into the river far below, glistening in the light of the almost-full moon. The bridge railing was cold at his back—he could feel it all the way through his jacket and shirt to his skin. He could see his breath glowing in the night air.
The nearly-frozen water rushed by in the river below, flowing under the bridge behind him and on toward the ocean far away in a steady flow, silver in the moonlight and heavily laden with winter rain. As soon as he gathered his courage, Hank would let go of his grip on the railing and fall into those icy waters, to disappear forever from the world of men.
It was New Year’s Day, 1986, an hour after midnight, and it was the end of things for Hank.
Or it should have been.
It was also the night he first met Dale.
Author Bio
I live with my husband of 25 years (Mark, below right) in a leafy Sacramento, California suburb, in a little yellow house with a brick fireplace and a couple pink flamingoes out front.
I’ve always occupied the space between the here and now and the what could be. Indoctrinated into fantasy and sci fi by my mother at the tender age of nine, I devoured her library. But as I grew up and read the golden age classics and more modern works as well, I began to wonder where all the people like me were.
After I came out at twenty three, I decided that it was time to create the kinds of stories I couldn’t find at Waldenbooks. If there weren’t many gay characters in my favorite genres, I would reimagine them myself, populating them with men who loved men. I would subvert them and remake them to my own ends. And if I was lucky enough, someone else would want to read the things I wrote.
My friends say my brain works a little differently – I sees relationships between things that others miss, and get more done in a day than most folks manage in a week. Although I was born an introvert, I learned to reach outside himself and connect with others like me.
I write stories that subvert expectations, that seek to transform traditional sci fi, fantasy, and contemporary worlds into something new and unexpected. I also run both Queer Sci Fi and QueeRomance Ink with my husband Mark, sites that bring people like us together to promote and celebrate fiction that reflects our own reality.
My writing, whether romance or genre fiction (or a little bit of both) brings a queer energy to my stories, infusing them with love, beauty and power and making them soar. I imagine a world that could be, and in the process, maybe changes the world that is, just a little.
I was recognized as one of the top new gay authors in the 2017 Rainbow Awards, and my debut novel “Skythane” received two awards and an honorable mention.
