Dante was sent to watch over a young Seth when his mother died. As an angel, he had many rules to follow. The most important of which was to never fall in love—especially when it involves a human who is your charge. For the last ten years, Dante has kept his feelings for Seth hidden. That is until the night Seth’s past catches up with him.
When Seth is murdered, their destinies are changed forever. Feelings and emotions come to the surface, but will the rules that govern the afterlife keep Dante and Seth apart for eternity, or will they be able to find their happily ever after together?
Excerpt
Dante watched the sun dip below the horizon. The cloudless blue sky turned to fire with streaks of reds, yellows, and oranges. Soon the colors disappeared leaving the heavens dark. The twinkling of stars and the bright full moon were the only light left to guide his way. Dante needed to get to the city. The young man placed in his care would soon be making his rounds there.
Dante stepped off the rooftop. Aided by strategically-placed slits in his shirt, his onyx-colored wings extended from his back, and spread wide. A few flaps of those feathered appendages helped him glide to the alley below. In the bad parts of town—such as the one he was in now—passageways such as this were typically vacant.
The humans who lived in the unsavory conditions weren’t trusting. Their pasts dictated their cautious behavior while the present heightened the fears and uncertainty. Avoiding the shadows seemed to be an unspoken rule. They’d seen many problems happen under cover of darkness. Not that other mortals hadn’t had the same fears. However, the homeless ones or those living in situations like these were more fearful.
Dante had watched silently all these years, studying the ways of the humans during his time on Earth. He was an angel that belonged to the guardian caste. Given a select number of charges to take care of throughout his existence, he’d learned many things. Each person had an individual story to tell as well as different experiences. Their exposure to life—both good and bad—made them the people they were today.
One in particular interested Dante. A young man with short wavy hair, the color of chestnuts. Bangs that fell over his forehead and occasionally covered his eyes. Seth had the face of an angel and emerald green eyes that were haunted by his past. Perfect lips rested under a slightly turned up nose. Clean shaven, his features were still soft, yet masculine.
The young man was beautiful. Seth’s smile lit up the night and was warm like the midday sun in the summertime. Everyone enjoyed having him around. How could they not? He was sweet, kind and cared about others. Seth had a heart of gold.
Seth was Dante’s current charge.
