“Children aren’t vermin. Even when they’re poor,” I whispered, my cold rage urging me to draw my dagger. “We might be Dust, but we are real people who live and love, hope and toil. The only difference between us and you other castes is luck.”
“Well, mother, your luck is finished here. Get out.” He moved forward, his sword raised to menace me.
I drew myself up and spat on him. “Not without my boy, and any other stolen children you might have in there.”
