A Taste of Honey Bear Anthology: Excerpt From “The Do-It-Yourself Guide to Getting Over Yourself” by Robert B. McDiarmid

Editor’s Note: I’m a part of a new anthology that just came out on 8/18 from Dreamspinner Press: A Taste of Honey. And while the book is not Fantasy, Sci Fi or Paranormal per se, some of the stories in it include magical realism or present-day fantasy. I hope you’ll indulge me as I share the intros to a number of these stories in the lead-up to the book’s release. :) –Scott

A Taste of Honey anthologyJust from Dreamspinner Press – A Taste of Honey – the ultimate bear romance anthology. Guys don’t have to be in their twenties, perfectly sculpted, and hairless to be hot. Bears are real men with real bodies–and that doesn’t always mean a perfect six-pack or an immaculately smooth chest. With bears, it can mean more man to love. The men in this anthology are chubs, cubs, grizzlies, pandas, polar bears, and more–all looking for a connection. And beneath their burly physiques are hearts of gold. Explore the bear scene and beyond with these big, hairy guys and the men who find them irresistibly sexy.

We’ve got a bear-a-day this week – the intro to each of these stories to whet your appetite for more.

Today’s Excerpt: “The Do-It-Yourself Guide to Getting Over Yourself” by Robert B. McDiarmid

I mean–duh?–would I be reading a self-help book about getting over a relationship if this shit was easy? I’d been dumped–and dumped hard. I was not going to go down easy.

I was going for full-tilt drama victim. How could he do this to me? Easy answer. He’s a man. Being dumped is a total bitch. It makes you feel as if the earth has been removed from underneath your feet. You can’t feel anything. You find yourself in a total limbo, lost in space, and the sense of helplessness is the worst–nothing you can do. It hurts even more when you know you did nothing wrong, that you were good, but yet not good enough. He chose to take a path full of uncertainties, versus you.

So here I was on a weekend vacation to Palm Springs, drowning in sunlight and vodka, pretending it all never happened. So far, that recipe was simply a disaster.

The book suggested, “Forgiveness is a beautiful gift to yourself. It lets you imagine a time where the injury to your heart is healed and you can reach out to your ex without thinking destructive thoughts, but with an authentic hug full of love.”

Oh really?

An authentic hug full of love?

Simon and Schuster actually gave someone an advance based on that paragraph? This perky author had obviously never met my ex. I was having destructive thoughts, all right. I daydreamed of picking up the morning paper and seeing that a runaway Russian space satellite had fallen right on his home on Twin Peaks.

“Gay couple dies in horrible and over-the-top-painful melodramatic death as the Romanov Space Satellite fell from orbit, creating a steaming burned crater on Elliot Street where the two were hosting a mad orgy party…,” I pretended the article would read. “Both suffering from fifth-degree burns over their entire bodies, the couple would have lived had not the ambulance carrying them to the hospital been hit by an out-of-control N-line train. The couple will be missed by the makers of Crisco and J-Lube.”

Okay, so maybe the book didn’t speak entirely to where I was at the time. I wasn’t quite at the forgiveness stage.
