The Bear Fetish by John Amory
A taxi dropped Robert off in front of the Hyatt in downtown Albuquerque. After marveling at how inexpensive the fare was compared to back home, he checked into his room, a modest one since his firm was footing the bill. Robert heaved his carry-on bag, containing just enough toiletries and clothing for his three-day stay, onto the small table by the window and dug through his messenger for the file he’d placed there earlier. Flopping down on the bed, he cracked the manila folder open and stared blankly at its contents.
The corporate merger had been the bane of Robert’s existence for the past several months, as a major bank his East Coast employer represented was acquiring a smaller, regional branch in the Southwest. Robert was assigned to hand deliver the forms to the bank’s owner, an attempt to make the acquisition feel less impersonal, and begin the process of transitioning Sun West Bank into the new regional hub for First Federal. He’d studied the contents of the file, forward and back, to the point that he knew the branch manager’s social security number by heart. To really impress these people, Robert was determined to know everything there was to know about Sun West before his meeting the next morning. But after a five-hour flight, his brain felt like mush and refused to concentrate on the words and charts before him.
“This just isn’t going to happen,” Robert admitted to himself. He reached into the bedside table drawer and withdrew the visitor’s guide, looking for an open restaurant. A meal would do him good, and it would wake up his mind enough to retain the last bits of information his file held. Not much immediately jumped out at Robert as appetizing, and those places that did had already closed for the evening. Apparently things weren’t open as late in Albuquerque as they were in The City That Never Sleeps…
