TJ slipped his phone into his pocket, pushed off his truck, and turned to get into it. Sitting behind the wheel, he put the key in the ignition and looked at the oil refinery in his rearview mirror.

“One more week, and I will never see you again.” He smirked, flipping off the refinery.

After pushing the ignition button, TJ put the truck into gear and started forward.

He didn’t see the horned creature roll out of the shadows. The towering monster with shadows for skin that dripped off its white skeleton watched the truck. Its eyes pulsed like dying embers. Rolling forward, it dissipated back into the shadows.

Crossing the North Dakota/Montana border, TJ rolled down the windows of the truck to let the fresh prairie air swirl around him. In the distance, he could see a strange swirl of shadows. They spun together like snakes; something was taking shape.

He slammed on the brakes and tried to swerve, but it was too late.

“Mother Fu—” he cried out, his voice silenced by the sound of the truck slamming into the creature.

The Nightglider didn’t even flinch.

The steering wheel pinned against his chest crushed his sternum, making it impossible to breathe. Choking on his own blood, he looked up. All he could see was the red eyes of the creature who had killed him pulsing with intensity as it stood, silently watching a job well done.

“Wh—” TJ coughed. “What—”

With one final convulsion, the light faded from his eyes.

As the remnants of his soul ascended towards the heavens, the Nightglider’s eyes glistened with hunger. Opening its mouth, it unhinged its jaw, salivating for the taste of it. Inhaling deepening, the swirling particles sparked against the exposed bone of its mouth. Popping and crackling like sparks from a fire as they slid down its throat toward the red gem on its chest. With a pop, it illuminated, glistening with the light of its new hostage.

This was no ordinary mortal. He was something else. Something powerful.

Opening its mouth, the creature screamed, summoning the shadows from the bowls of the darkness. They wrapped around him, twisting up from the ground like vines, enveloping it in their ice-cold embrace. Fading from the terrestrial plane, all that remained was TJ’s lifeless body, broken and bloody on the asphalt, and the sound of a scream drifting through the darkness.

With the scream echoing in the wind, sixty-two-year-old Daffodil Takizawa opened her eyes. She clutched her chest and jerked into a sitting position as the lace curtains of her bedroom window fluttered with the last whisper of the dying sound.

“Tadashi!” she gasped tearfully. Her grandson was dead. She could feel it.

An emerald green light emanating from a small wooden box on her dresser caught her attention. Swallowing hard, her sadness shifted into seriousness.

“It has begun.” Closing her eyes she allowed a single tear to roll down her cheek. There was too much work for anything more. For a brief moment, her thoughts flickered, and her breath caught in her throat. “Max,” she exhaled. “I’m so sorry, sweetheart.”
