QSFer C.J. Dragon has a new MM sci-fi romance out, The Ambassador book 1: River.
River Carteret is a diplomat, known for crafting solutions between disparate groups.
Growing up on Earth under the control of the Guardians, he’d never experienced hardships, such as war, plague, or famine.
Urged by his Guardian supervisor, River volunteers to go to the planet Drakonis to broker an agreement between the Drakos, and the Draas. He is determined to bring equality to the Draas, wresting it from their ruling class, the Drakos, if necessary.
There is only one, small problem.
The Drakos are a sanguinary race, needing blood to survive, and River, with his rare hemoglobin, constitutes a banquet to the Drakos, a lethal hazard for him.
Mix in an angelically handsome vampire Prince, low oxygen levels, and food he can’t eat, and River has set himself up for a task that will cause him to use every skill he has to survive.
Will River become prey to the Drakos?
Or will he succeed, losing his heart along the way?

Meeting with Sebastien was always…different. The Guardians looked a little like the ‘grays’ of legend, but were about seven feet tall, thin, with large eyes, rudimentary noses, and small mouths. They wore robes in somber hues of dark blue or green, with an occasional black or deep red thrown in. They moved silently, which was frankly creepy, and had low, sonorous voices. The Guardians all looked much the same, and River hoped Sebastien was the Guardian he’d been hired by, but didn’t actually know that for sure. Not that it mattered, since what one Guardian knew, they all knew.
Arriving exactly on time for his review, Sebastien stood as River came to the door, indicating he should sit in front of him. The diplomat quietly took a deep breath, and sat as Sebastien did, giving his supervisor a respectful bow of his head. “Good afternoon, sir.”
Guardians did not blink as humans did, so Sebastien stared at River for several moments before glancing down. River focused his eyes on his supervisor’s desk. His boss shuffled a few actual papers before looking back at the diplomat.
“River Carteret, you have done well this year on your assignments, performing above what was expected. Your food and clothing stipends have been increased as a reward, and you may move to another tier of housing if you wish.” The deep voice paused before continuing. “Have you any requests to make or difficulties to discuss?”
River looked up, meeting Sebastien’s eyes. “Thank you, sir, for the increase in my stipends. I believe I’ll stay living where I am at this time. I find that I have felt…restless of late, and wished to inquire about off-world assignments, preferably those that are short term. I would appreciate being considered for a diplomatic role under those circumstances.”
Sebastien regarded him for several minutes without speaking. River, used to these pauses, did not fidget, or look away. Finally, his supervisor blinked, closing his eyes for a moment.
“There is a situation forming with a new race that may require them to return to their home world. You would have to pass certain criteria to accompany them, and it would not be short term. I estimate it would take at least a year to work out an agreement with them. If you wish to consider this, I will forward the information needed to you. It may surprise you that your recent unease has been noticed. This may be a solution. Further information will be given should you meet the criteria needed.”
River felt a spike of interest he hadn’t felt in some time, causing his pulse to increase. “Thank you, sir. I will read over the criteria and let you know if I can meet what is needed. I appreciate your willingness to offer this to me, should that be the case.”
Sebastien inclined his head, expressionless. “Thanks are not warranted, Diplomat Carteret, until you know the full extent of this posting. Given its nature, only volunteers will be considered.” He stood slowly, as River followed suit. “I will await your answer within three days.”
River bowed his head again, murmuring, “Yes, sir,” as he turned and left the office. He could feel Sebastien’s eyes on him the entire time.
