Writing in any genre requires research. Whether you’re writing about actual historical events or creating a whole new world for your book it doesn’t matter. It’s likely research is a large part of creating a novel.
As readers of scifi are well aware many of the books/movies/etc created half a century ago resulted in the development of some technology we have today.
As writers of scifi I feel strongly that we as a group should be leaders in using the new technology available today. We should try to integrate it into our daily lives. Our characters often do, so we should too. It’s sort of that practice what you preach idea.
On that note my first post is not about a certain type of research, or cool idea to be integrated in a story but about a basic tool of writing. You need a place to keep your research stuff! Like it, love it or hate it the digital age is upon us and we all live in it. As writers we need to use what the digital world has to offer in the creation of a manuscript, its submission and the promotion of the subsequent book. With the rise in popularity of eBooks readers need some proficiency with the means (Kindles, tablets, eReaders) to find, purchase and read those books.
There is a lot of good to be said about digital formats for books as well as other forms of entertainment. No shipping costs, the products are less expensive and they’re good for the environment.

So, take those digital age things, love them, put them under your pillow and cuddle them, slap them on a t-shirt and above all take this digital age and all it has to offer and own it.
Consider this scenario: you’re waiting in line at the grocery store. There is four people with loaded carts in front of you so you whip out your phone and look for something to read. Maybe you come upon an interesting article that is the perfect thing to use in your current novel you’re creating. You need a place to keep it until later so you can add it to your ever growing pile of research.
So put that article in your Pocket! This is a nice app that you can use on mobile and PC devices to store, and categorize all those lovely and useful tidbits from the internet. It’s free on Google Play or Apple Store.
