For Writers: Holidays of the Future

Sci Fi Christmas - Pixabay

Today’s writer topic comes from QSFer J. Scott Coatsworth: With the Fourth of July nearly upon us here in the United States, I’m in a holiday mood. So I got to wondering. In the future (let’s say 500 years from now), what will the holidays look like? Will Thanksgiving and Christmas survive? What would a Valentines’ Day on Mars look like? Propose a holiday (current or new) for the year 2516, and tell us all about it. :) Bonus points for queering the holiday. Join the chat

Dispatches from Hogwarts G.S.A.: A Game of Thrones Report Card

We love HBO’s Game of Thrones. It’s some of the best storytelling on premium cable, possibly the best production quality ever for a TV series (DRAGONS!), and the directing and acting are pretty darn awesome to boot. We’re also really happy the phenomenally popular show has increased interest in high fantasy on the small screen, big screen, and in books. Another thing we love about GoT is that it has gay, lesbian and bisexual characters and decent portrayals of women. The Hogwarts G.S.A. believes gender equality and LGBTQ equality go hand-in-hand, so strong, diverse female characters are important to us … Read more

Angel’s Bits – Genre Bits and Pieces

One of the biggest issues we watch authors obsess and fuss over these days is genre. What genre is this? Should I call it that? How many genres can a thing be? So why do we have genres in the first place? Who did this horrible thing to us? The short answer is the Ancient Greeks. Isn’t it always? Seriously, this is where it all started when the Greeks started to divide things into poetry and drama, into tragedy and comedy, epic poetry, lyric poetry and love poetry. (Seriously, there are three separate muses to handle poetry.) Modern genres start … Read more

Trailer: NASA’s Jupiter Approach

Jupiter

A spinning, solar-powered spacecraft as wide as a basketball court will arrive at Jupiter on July 4 to study the giant planet and to take the highest-resolution images of Jupiter in history. NASA’s robotic Juno probe is carrying seven science instruments designed to help scientists figure out how Jupiter formed and evolved. The planet is the most massive in our solar system — a huge ball of gas 11 times wider than Earth. Researchers think it was the first planet to form and that it holds clues to how the solar system evolved. “One of the primary goals of Juno … Read more
