Writing in the Zone

Every now and then, the stars align. I’ve got a concept, a chunk of time and my writing brain is charged and ready to go, and I enter the zone – that place where the writing flows from my fingers like milk in the land of milk and honey. If you’re a writer, you’ve been there – that place in your head where you feel like you could just write and write and write – as if you had tapped into another world, and your characters were just writing themselves. As if you were just the scribe, recounting events that … Read more

Procrastination – the Writer’s Friend?

Every day, I try to write for at least an hour. I’ve set aside for myself (which my hubby Mark’s wonderful understanding) the hour from 5-6 PM to sit down and actually write (or rewrite). Not to network, not to blog, not to research, but to actually work on the writing. Of course, life sometimes interferes, like when we are going out to meet friends for dinner – those times I try to reschedule my time for earlier (or later) in the day. But sometimes I sit down to write, and I just can’t get into it. I’m not sure … Read more

Writing Wolves

I’m in the midst of a new/old story – spacemen come back to a depopulated earth only to find out there are werewolves there. I’m writing the wolf POV in present tense to give a sense of immediacy, but got called on my lack of pack dynamics in the story (thanks, Beth!), and I realize I’m basing them on nature specials I saw as a kid and on some half-remembered episodes of True Blood. LOL… With wolves in particular, I know there’s a pack hierarchy, usually with an alpha male, but that female wolves also have high status in the … Read more

Review: Voodoo ‘n’ Vice (Galactic Alliance #3) by K.C. Burn

Rating: 4 stars out of 5 In his anger and obedience to fleet rules and regulations, fleet captain Gideon Arcturus makes a serious error in judgement regarding the Ankyros Ambassador and his lover. The repercussions from that disastrous event finds Gideon banished to Elora Ki, the compost heap of the galaxy. Disgraced and demoted, Gideon is now a subordinate to a man he viewed as an inferior and considered an embarrassment to his wealthy and influential father. Gideon’s last romantic entanglement was a nasty set up by a rival officer that almost cost him everything. But during a visit to … Read more

Starting a New Free Reads Section

Hi all… We’re continuing to expand the features on the Queer Sci Fi site. I’ve just added a free reads section – and to start it off, I added my own story Re-Life. If you have any free sci fi, fantasy, or paranormal works you’d like to have included, we can link to them on your site or another, or host them here on their own page. Works do not need to be exclusive to our site. If you want to add one, please email me at scott@queerscifi.com. :)

Writing Ugly

In writing, it seems to me that the trick is to invest these characters with flaws but to still make the reader fall in love with them. Because a flawed multidimensional character is often much more interesting than a picture-perfect Ken doll.

Promoting Your Book Online

As anyone who visits this blog regularly (or even looks at my Facebook page) will know, I recently had a short story accepted into a Dreamspinner anthology. It’s a thrilling first for me, but once the excitement wore off, I started wondering how to promote it – I mean, it’s great to be published, but what good is it if no one ever reads your masterpiece? I’m new to the writing promotion game, though I’ve been on FB, Twitter, Google + and Pinterest for years promoting my day job. I’ve seen some great ideas in the groups I’m a part … Read more

Book Review: The Starving Years

This book review is more centered on the author than the book. I love Jordan Castillo Price. She “bends the rules” of gay romantic fiction. But I couldn’t help but think as I read this great book, that this wasn’t a romance. I’d hesitate to say if it was super explicit or not. It was gay science fiction for sure, but I probably wouldn’t label it MMM, or even MMM Romance. Why does this bother me? This labeling? Good question. I think that this labeling possibly affects Price’s image and her work. She’s on the edge of these genres (science … Read more

The Tension Between Sci Fi Romance and Gay Sci Fi

In my wanderings through the LGBT sci fi community, I’m finding that there’s a whole lot out there these days melding sci fi themes with MM romance. While I think that’s wonderful and an amazing thing, I also find very little that’s straight (pardon the pun) sci fi that includes LGBT characters, but is not centered around an MM (or FF) romance. Don’t get me wrong – there’s a lot of great sci fi out there (Angel Martinez, Amy Lane, I’m looking at you) that gets the sci fi right and includes the romance too. But I come at this … Read more
